Only one game in Group B today, but maybe the best one in the tournament so far, as two of the biggest favorites to win the 2010 ACN, Ghana and the Ivory Coast clashed horns with the Ivorians dominating the young Ghanaian side, grabbing their first win of the tournament after drawing with Burkina Faso in their tourney opener. Gervinho, Siaka Chico Tiene (beautiful free kick) and Didier Drogba made it 3-0, with Ghana getting a dubious penalty in injury time, converted by Asamoah Gyan.
The game was packed with chances for both teams but Ghana’s players seemed to lack the patience and concentration when presented with those opportunities. When it comes down to it, the Ivory Coast have more quality and talent on their team than any other African side, probably even more than Egypt. Maybe this time, when the two meet, which will probably happen eventually, the Ivorian can finally overcome their Kryptonite.
With this win and four points in their first two games, the Ivorians secured their place in the quarter finals. Ghana need to beat Burkina Faso in their next game to join them. Burkina Faso only need a draw.
