NFL Rumors – Cleveland Browns Interested in Fred Davis

The Cleveland Browns were looking for a tight end even before they lost Benjamin Watson to the New Orleans Saints, but now they’re in need of one more than ever. On their sights? Fred Davis of the Washington Redskins, a player the Redskins also want to re-sign, but have to wait for him to test the waters of free agency.

Davis has struggled with injuries the last couple of seasons, playing in a total of 19 games. He did have somewhat of a breakthrough 2011 season, playing in 12 games, catching a career high 59 passes for 796 yards. He kept the same kind of averages per reception with Robert Griffin III throwing to him, but totaled at 325 yards with no touchdowns by missing more than half a season last year.

Davis isn’t the only tight end out there for the Browns, but there are very few of decent caliber, who also fit their plans of having a vertical offense. Dennis Pitta of the Baltimore Ravens is also a name they’re into, but he is a restricted free agent, and would require possibly paying him more than he actually deserves, just so the Ravens wouldn’t be able to match the offer. Further down the line of TEs available are Randy McMichael, Chris Cooley and Dallas Clark.

At the moment, it seems that if the Browns don’t get their hand on Davis, they’ll probably try and find someone in the draft, or hope that Jordan Cameron develops a lot faster than they anticipate him to.
