Maybe this is just a way for the Denver Broncos to put some pressure on Elvis Dumervil after offering him a contract that’s not so much to his liking, but in any case, the Denver Broncos are going after other pass rushers that are available, most notably Dwight Freeney and John Abraham.
While not being the youngest guys on the free agency market, there’s no doubt the two can still play in their advanced 30’s. Abraham is no longer a every down kind of player, but he did very well for the Atlanta Falcons last season, recording 10 sacks and 37 tackles. Abraham fits the system for the Broncos, being highly successful as the defensive end in a 4-3 system which went very well for the Broncos last year while going after quarterbacks.
Dwight Freeney is more of a question mark; He had to play in a 3-4 defense most of the time last season for the Colts, not something he really enjoyed, or that had his only NFL team since entering the league in 2002 very impressed with him. He recorded only 5 sacks in 13 games for the team, a career low for a year in which he wasn’t injured.
Peyton Manning is obviously pushing for the Broncos to sign Freeney, but it’s obviously a matter of dollars for both sides. It’s also a matter of how much the Broncos feel Freeney has left, which goes the same for Abraham, and whether or not getting a guy who’s not going to play every defensive snap is the right way to go, while leaving Elvis Dumervil out in the cold over $2 million or so, if the rumors are to be believed.
