The Kansas City Chiefs are officially trying to get rid of their left tackle, Branden Albert, hoping to get a second round draft pick for him and another one for next year’s NFL draft, hoping that needy teams at the position – the Miami Dolphins, San Diego Chargers and the New Orleans Saints want him badly enough to give away two selections.
With the number one pick in the NFL draft, it’s more than likely the Chiefs are going to try and get an offensive tackle – Luke Joeckel coming out of Texas A&M seems to be the first name on their mind, but he’s not alone in it. It’s not just Joeckel they’re think of. They gave up a draft pick to trade for Alex Smith from the San Francisco 49ers, and the Chiefs are trying to get at least something back this year already, maybe adding another offensive line signing after releasing Eric Winston, their right tackle.
The Dolphins are definitely thinking about going for Albert, seeing as how they lost their starting left tackle of the past few years, Jake Long, to the St. Louis Rams. The San Diego Chargers are in a worse position, having a crumbled O-Line, also losing Louis Vasquez to the Denver Broncos in free agency. They won’t be able to fill all their needs through the draft, and going for Albert, who recently signed a franchise tender worth $9.8 million for the coming season, might be the best solution available.
The New Orleans Saints weren’t such a mess, protection-wise, like the desperate Charges. Still, after losing Jermon Bushrod, the Saints are facing the question of either doing some re-shuffling in front of Drew Brees, or bringing in an accomplished player, that is 28 but has only one 16-game season under his belt since joining the Chiefs in 2008.
