It’s about a month since the Philadelphia Eagles released their too expensive cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, and despite all the interest and visits with the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers, he’s still without a contract for next season, as his exact role with both teams, not to mention the money he’ll be paid, is still up in the air.

It’s not really hard to figure out Asomugha, despite his disappointing ability with the Eagles, especially in 2012, is going to be a starter for Rob Ryan in New Orleans for the Saints, who were on pace to set some negative NFL defensive records last year, until they started playing just a little bit of defense towards the end of the season, and finished 31st in the league in pass-defense, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the absolute worst.

For the 49ers, it’s a matter of improvement and upgrading instead of overhauling, thinking they need to get bigger and more physical at defensive back before they head into next season, thinking of how difficult it was for their secondary against both the Falcons and the Ravens in the postseason, not to mention the re-tooled and improved Seattle Seahawks, featuring their latest receiving threat, Percy Harvin.

The question for the 49ers regards Carlos Rogers – some suggest that the arrival of Asomugha, who will still command a rather big salary will lead to the release of the veteran corner and pro bowler in 2011, who isn’t getting any younger as well (32 next season), which is pretty much the same case with Asomugha. Others think the 49ers should keep both players and take the cap hit of having two expensive veteran corners competing for the same position, as extra depth at defensive back never hurt anyone, if they were able to afford it. The 49ers are off the Darrelle Revis train, so they have plenty of cap space to accommodate both players.
