It’s hard to think of too many teams that need to upgrade pretty much every position on the field, both on offense and defense, but the New York Jets, unfortunately, are one of them. While looking at getting stronger through the draft over the next couple of seasons, getting play-makers is something on their mind, and linebacker Barkevious Mingo coming out of LSU might be the best they’ll get with their first round pick.
Looking not just towards 2013 but also 2014, the Jets are trying to make as many moves as possible to get themselves double-digit draft picks for 2014, seeing as its going to be impossible this year. One of the methods is losing free agents, more than they acquire, and through that receive compensatory draft picks, a maximum of four. They’ve lost six starters to free agency and at the most optimistic prediction, only three of their newly signed will become starters. That means there’s a good chance of double-digit picks in 2014.
For now, they’ve been looking and working out some names, not necessarily for the first pick. Oregon’s linebacker, Dion Jordan, and Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner (will visit) are on their list, just like D.J. Swearinger, a safety out of South Carolina, projected to be a second round pick and Jonathan Cyprien out of Florida International, who’s another borderline first-second round safety. The Jets need help in the secondary bad, but would probably do better by addressing more than depth with their first pick, trying to go for an impact player like Mingo.
Mingo has the speed and the explosiveness coming on the outside the Jets currently lack. They have good interior defense with Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples, but Rex Ryan needs a guy who can gets sacks just as badly as he needs help in the secondary, regardless of the situation with Darrelle Revis. Mingo should be the best player available to fit that role when the Jets are lined up to make their first pick.
