So far, only one reporter (Pro Football Weekly’s Nolan Nawrocki) has raised some doubts over Geno Smith and his ability to become a legitimate not to mention successful NFL quarterback. There are many teams looking to get the former West Virginia quarterback, but with no one really sure if he’s going to be ready to start right away, there’s a good chance the Philadelphia Eagles are in the best position to make a move for him.
Before the free agency period and all of the quarterback moves, it looked like very few, maybe not even one, quarterbacks will get picked in the first round. But Geno Smith has been in impressive on his workouts and his pro-day at Morgantown, rising up the ranks, looking like the number one quarterback in this draft class, as some stretches of the 2012 College Football season proved he can be.
The Kansas City Chiefs are also very interested in Smith, but after acquiring Alex Smith via trade, it’s hard to believe they’ll spend the number one draft pick on another quarterback when there are other needs to address, not to mention still trying to find a way and get back that second round draft pick they used to get Smith from the San Francisco 49ers. They’re also inclined to trade away Branden Albert, which means they’re going to need a tackle, and most mocks predict Luke Joeckel as their man.
Smith? The Philadelphia Eagles don’t need him to start right away – just fight for his place behind Michael Vick, and start to develop into a quarterback the Eagles can rely on for the future, something they don’t have in Vick, Nick Foles or Dennis Dixon, brought in because he knows Kelly’s system very well from his College days, but no one is expecting him to take over the number one spot at QB.
