Although the door leading to a return to the Minnesota Vikings still isn’t closed for Antoine Winfield, the veteran cornerback knows there’s quite a lot of demand for his skills despite his age, and seems to be favoring offers from the Washington Redskins or the new team in the race for his services, the Seattle Seahawks.
The interesting thing about the Seahawks is their depth and quality at secondary, possibly the best unit in the NFL last season, with All-Pro Richard Sherman leading the pack. Winfield is probably going to be a nickel option in that defense, maybe even a dime when falling back heavily against the pass, but no one said luxury is disallowed in the NFL.
The team that seems strongest in the pursuit of Winfield, despite of his still unmade mind regarding his 2013 workplace, are the Washington Redskins, being much more in need of improving their situation in the backfield against the pass, despite re-signing DeAngelo Hall.
Winfield himself knows the Vikings are very interested in re-signing him, hoping to get him for 10th season. Winfield might have lost some speed, but he is still a very good corner, adding three interceptions in what was somewhat of a comeback season for him after missing most of 2011. While earlier in the off-season Winfield was more in favor of returning to the team that released him last month, the surprising growing interest in him, some even suggesting the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots also waiting for things to unfold, has led him to delay his decision regarding a return to the team he’s been with since 2004.
