Despite not playing an NFL game in over two years, Terrell Owens, eight months away from his 40th birthday, still sees himself as someone NFL teams might consider signing, with the Chicago Bears and coach Marc Trestman being his first option.

Owens signed with the Seattle Seahawks last season, shortly before the beginning of the 2012 campaign, but was released 20 days later, before getting a chance to play for the team, leaving him on the verge of retirmenet once again. Maybe it’s his financial situation, maybe a desire to stay in the headlines somehow, or maybe just his love for the game. Owens is staying in shape just in case someone has the courage to call him up and try to make something out of the potential hall-of-fame wide receiver.

Owens played under Trestman for one season in 1996, his rookie year, when Trestman was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He last played in the NFL for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010, catching 72 passes for 983 yards and 9 touchdowns. Production-wise, even two years absent from the game, Owens is likely to be good enough for a few snaps each game, no doubt. Behavior is a different issue, and his presence often creates a certain problem no one wants to deal with anymore.

Coach Trestman has a great football mind and he will get the most out of the talent the Bears have. Guys like Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall and Matt Forte will be even better playing for Coach Trestman.

Owens also mentioned in a recent interview with David Kaplan of CSN Chicago that he’s staying in shape just so he’ll be ready for any opportunity that might come his way. Knowing that waiting for teams to call him up isn’t going to land him any jobs, he’s doing the campaigning himself, hoping someone is desperate enough to notice.
