While the part of Kevin de Bruyne in the deal is still to be determined, both Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen want to complete their issue with Andre Schurrle, who most likely will become a Blues player in the next few days, if everything progresses according to plan.
Schurrle, 22, has scored 18 goals in 61 matches over the last couple of season. Along with Mario Gotze and Marco Reus, many consider him as the future of German football and one of the top rising talents in European football. He can play as a striker, but he’s mostly positioned on the left wing.
The Leverkusen brass has flown to London in order to seal the deal. Schurrle’s agent is quite confident that by the end of the weekend, he’ll have officially become a Chelsea player. He should be costing somewhere between £20-25 million, but Leverkusen also want De Bruyne as part of the deal, in a loan.
The 21-year old Belgian footballer has been impressing this season with Werder Bremen, scoring six goals and adding nine assists. One of the problems holding the deal is him – he wants a long term deal from his next club, not just to be on loan, feeling his chances of finding a spot in the Chelsea squad aren’t that great. Borussia Dortmund are also interested in signing him on something more permanent, which might mean Chelsea could have to pay more for Schurrle.
Chelsea already signed a German winger last season – Marko Marin. He missed quite a lot of time earlier on due to an injury, but has only played in six matches, most of them off the bench, since regaining full health. Rafa Benitez simply doesn’t believe in a player many thought wouldn’t be given too man y chances anyway.
Schurrle is better than Marin, and his price alone will guarantee he gets more than a few cameos off the bench here and there. The question is, how quickly and how “cheaply” Chelsea can seal the deal?
