Liverpool Destroy Newcastle in a Meaningless 6-0

Maybe Liverpool still believe they’re going to win the final ticket to the Europa League, but it’s hard to see it happening. It doesn’t mean they can’t have fun in the final days of the season, thrashing Newcastle 6-0 at St. James’ Park, with Daniel Sturridge scoring twice, as the presence of Luis Suarez wasn’t missed. The biggest win in the Brendan Rodgers era also saw goals from Jordan Henderson (two goals), Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini.

With the win, Liverpool are still seventh, five points behind Everton, and improve to 8 points behind Tottenham, although with one more match they’ve played, meaning Liverpool need a perfect finish while Spurs lose all their matches to finish fifth in the league.

Meanwhile, Newcastle, who are still at risk of finding themselves relegated, are 16th with 37 points, five points and a match more than 18th Wigan. It is their worst home defeat since a 1-7 loss to Blackburn in 1925.

Daniel Agger opened the scoring with a tricky, lopping header early on. Henderson made it 2-0 after 17 minutes off a Sturridge assist, and the England striker scored in the 54th minute to make it 3-0 and six minutes later once again off a Henderson assist. Fabio Borini, coming off the bench, scored his first league goal for the Reds in the 74th minute and after Debuchy was sent off for a second yellow card, Henderson made it a humiliating 6-0.
