NFL Rumors – Cleveland Browns Interested in Brian Hoyer

Brian Hoyer

One of the teams a lot of people were sure about adding a quarterback in the 2013 NFL Draft were the Cleveland Browns, but they ended up using most of their picks on defensive players. Now, they’re ready to dive into the market once again and add one via trade, with Brian Hoyer of the Arizona Cardinals looking like the number one choice.

The Browns aren’t too happy with what they have right now – Brandon Weeden, who did start in 15 games last season but finished with a 5-10 record, not to mention showing a less than consistent form throughout the year, although the narrow selection of offensive options at his disposal certainly didn’t help.

And there are Tavaris Jackson, who’s mostly useful as a backup at best, and Thaddeus Lewis, who did get to start and enjoy an impressive showing against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but there isn’t too much faith among the Browns shot-callers in the former Duke player.

So Hoyer is likely to be added, at least to increase the competition for the starting spot. The 27 year old who played for Michigan State has been in the NFL since 2009, playing for the New England Patriots three seasons before moving on to Arizona.

He did get to start once for the Cardinals last year, in their mess of a situation at the position due to a terrible offensive line, and there certainly those who think he has shown enough in the few chances he’s gotten in the league to get a starting position, or at least a few games at it. Kind of like Matt Flynn, just a lot less expensive, and impressive.

Hoyer signed a one-year deal for $2 million, and with the Cardinals already adding two quarterbacks this off-season (Drew Stanton and Carson Palmer), he’s looking like the first name for them on the trading block.
