Two teams that had a disappointing performance from their secondary units last season were the Carolina Panthers and the Washington Redskins. Meanwhile, someone like Quentin Jammer, who might be past his prime but still a very useful player, hasn’t been picked up.

The Redskins have already taken a visit from Jammer, who has spent his entire NFL career (since 2002) with the San Diego Chargers, starting 16 games a season in all but two of the last 10 years, but he left DC without a signed contract. Meanwhile, the Redskins were quite busy in the draft acknowledging their weakness at defending the pass.

They drafted David Amerson with their 51st overall pick, a cornerback out of North Carolina State; Phillip Thomas, a safety out of Fersno State in the fourth round and Bacarri Rambo out of Georgia, another safety, in the sixth round.

Meanwhile, the Panthers, who are probably second in line on Jammer’s to-go list, haven’t addressed their issued at defensive backs at all, instead picking using their first pick on Star Lotulelei, a defensive tackle out of Utah. It leaves them quite depleted of serious talent at cornerback or safety, projected to be the worst in defending the pass next season unless some upgrade is going to be made soon.

The Panthers are also a bit tied up with a bad salary cap situation, one of the worst in the NFL. Meanwhile, the Redskins are likely to being talks with Jammer this week, seeing him more of a corner, but there is a chance he’ll eventually be used as either a Nickelback or as a safety.
