After being released by the Dallas Cowboys, there hasn’t been too much interest in running back and potential return man Felix Jones. However, salvation might be coming from the direction of the Philadelphia Eagles, who do have a clear idea about who their top rushers should be, although it doesn’t mean Jones can’t help as another backup and in the return game.
The Eagles have worked out Jones, which doesn’t mean he’s going to replace LeSean McCoy or Bryce Brown, both highly rated by the Eagles’ coaching staff. And yet, there are much worse options than having someone like Jones, a five year veteran averaging 4.8 yards per carry during his career to have as a third option in the backfield.
In 2012, Felix Jones once again proved that being a feature back wasn’t part of the grand design for him. Injuries hurt him, yet, but it’s his ability that stung the most. He played in all 16 games, finishing with only 402 yards and 3 touchdowns, averaging just 3.6 yards per carry. The Cowboys might have done him some justice by giving him a chance to rest here and there, but with DeMarco Murray injured so often, they had no choice but to use Jones more than he should have been playing.
The Eagles do have return men – WR Damaris Johnson on punt returns, CB Brandon Boykin on kick returns. When healthy, Jones is better than the both of them, although he was a primary kick returner for the Dallas Cowboys only once during his tenure with them, doing less and less in that aspect, not scoring a return touchdown since his rookie season in 2008.
Other than that, Jones doesn’t have much of an option to be going on. The Eagles seem like the only team interested in him enough to give him a chance to prove his worth, hoping that Jones doesn’t ask for the kind of money he was making with the Cowboys. At this point in his career and according to his past performances, any offer for him will be something he should take.
