NFL Rumors – Atlanta Falcons Interested in Richard Seymour

Richard Seymour

After his release from the Oakland Raiders, Richard Seymour said he’s willing to play for 31 of the 32 franchises in the NFL, excluding the New England Patriots. His high salary demands have kept him off the radar so far for most teams looking for a versatile and accomplished defensive lineman, but the Atlanta Falcons might be eventually the place the three-time Super Bowl champions lands eventually.

Seymour has enjoyed his time with the Oakland Raiders, but his salary in 2013, a $13 million cap hit which some of it the Raiders still have to absorb, forced them to release the defensive tackle, who recorded 18.5 sacks in four season with the Raiders, making the Pro Bowl in 2010 and 2011.

The Falcons are cutting Tyson Clabo, but his spot will be available only after June 1, which means Seymour, 33 and a 12 year veteran in the league, will simply have to wait. The Falcons haven’t addressed too many defensive line issues during the draft, taking Malliciah Goodman out of Clemson in the fourth round and Stansly Maponga in the fifth round, both defensive ends. Seymour can play both in the middle or on the edge, although the number of snaps he’ll be able to participate in is limited.

The main issue, however, with Seymour, is the money he is going to make. He earned $30 million over the last two seasons, and taking a cut that’s more than 50% of the salary he’s gotten used to is quite a rough pill to swallow.

Seymour’s talents would be well appreciated on most teams in the NFL, but it’s hard to believe he’d be willing to give up on so much money for any team that’s not a contender, which also eliminates the chance of him returning to play for the Oakland Raiders. Atlanta sounds like a good place for him, even though they’ve already signed Osi Umenyiora this offseason, and are unlikely to make a huge splash of cash on another player who won’t be able to be an every-down kind of guy.
