Transfer Rumors 2013 – Manchester United Going After Leighton Baines & Marouane Fellaini

Leighton Baines, Marouane Fellaini

The arrival of David Moyes to Old Trafford means that surely some of his former players from Everton will come with him to Manchester United, and the first couple of names to come up are of Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini.

Baines has been on the United radar for quite a while. Regarded as the best left back in the Premier League for the last couple of years, surpassing both Ashley Cole and United’s own Patrice Evra, the red devils inquired about his availability last season but were declines. With Moyes making the switch from Goodison Park to the theater of dreams, the chances of the international left back, who has scored 14 league goals over the last three seasons, making the switch along with him are quite good.

And yes, United have had problems with their defense over the last couple of seasons. Age, and quality, but that’s mostly an issue in the center. Evra himself is less focused than before, and while on his good days has the ability to shut down a wing, those days are fewer than in the past, and the Frenchman has been known to make critical mistakes more than once.

The midfield is another problem United have been dealing with these last couple of years, probably being the main area on the pitch in which they’re far behind the best teams in Europe, which United always think of being part of. The arrival of Marouane Fellaini, who has played in a more and more attacking role over the last couple of seasons, might be the cure to the age and talent problem in the middle of the pitch.

While Fellaini has been linked with Chelsea for quite some time, adding Moyes to the mix at Old Trafford might help convince him to dump the trip south to London and stay in the Northwest. The Belgian international has scored 11 league goals this season, almost half of his total tally since arriving from Belgium, but will probably be in a more retreated role if he’ll arrive at United.
