After thinking it’s going to be a matter of no time before he finds himself a new team, Charles Woodson remains unsigned, unemployed, and getting more and more desperate to find himself a team to play for in the 2013 NFL season, willing to lower his standards in terms of quality and pay after getting only one interested party contact him – the San Francisco 49ers, after he was released by the Green Bay Packers, but they’ve moved on from him as well.
After adding Craigh Dahl and Eric Reid, the 49res have no use for the defensive back who played as a safety last season for the Packers, who didn’t want no part of Woodson once the 2012 season is over, and there doesn’t seem to be any chance for a reunion.
I don’t want to speculate on that because I have not heard anything from Green Bay. We parted our ways a couple months ago. They told me they were moving on. I guess I took that to mean there was no opportunity to go back so I am looking for a future with another organization.
Everyone thought Woodson, an 8-time Pro Bowl selection and 7-time All-Pro, including in 2011, which means he’s not playing as bad as a 36 year-old is expected to, will be on a team by now, including him. Not just any team, but a contender, instead of someone going nowhere or in some sort of rebuilding process. But reality has hit him in the face, and he’s willing to make the compromises needed from him to remain in the league for at least another year.
And Woodson certainly can. He might no longer be one of the best corners in the NFL, but he can do a good job as a safety or in certain Dime and Nickel packages as the extra defensive back. Teams might be shying away from him due to contract demands, but it’s also about age and not wanting a strong personality in the dressing room for some.
When this process first started out, that was my thing, I needed to go to a contender. I know I am towards the end of my career. At this point, I want to play football. So if it is a rebuilding stage, at this point if that is the circumstances I have to play under, then that is what I am going to do.
