From being a first round pick for the Chicago Bears two years ago, Gabe Carimi might soon find himself out of a job, fighting for what seems to be the right guard position or a backup spot, which he probably suited for while being watched by a coaching staff that didn’t pick him.

Carimi was the 29th overall pick in 2011, coming out of Wisconsin. A left tackle, he played in only two games during his rookie year because of an injury, both of them at right tackle. Last season, he remained at right tackle until he became an emergency option at right guard, a position he didn’t fill very well.

Back to tackle for him? Probably not. The left tackle position seems to be closed for Jermon Bushrod, arriving from the New Orleans Saints via free agency. Ja’Macrus Webb and Jonathan Scott seem to be in contention for the right tackle position, with the loser getting to be the swing offensive tackle backup player.

So how about starting at guard? The Bears used their first round pick on Kyle Long out of Oregon, who seems like a lock to be a starter in one of the guard positions, and the favorite to win the spot next to him is Matt Slauson, who arrived from the Jets and has been a starter at left guard for the last three seasons.

Carimi is in contention for one of the spots, but he seems to be well behind in the eyes of those evaluating him. He’s probably battling for the backup job at best, but there’s a very good chance that by the end of training camp, Carimi might not be a part of the 53-man roster the Bears have, despite his versatility and ability to play all four positions along the line.
