Despite playing only 5 NFL games over the last couple of seasons, Tim Hightower is still a wanted asset around the league, especially for teams looking to add a bit of depth to their running back situation while getting some pass-blocking and receiving ability as a bonus. The Washington Redskins, the last team he has played for, and the New York Giants, seem to be the first in line.

Hightower missed the entire 2012 season because he was released by the Redskins just before the year began. He played in only 5 games in 2011 before tearing his ACL. He has recovered from the injury, but the Redskins went with Alfred Morris and weren’t disappointed. Now they’re thinking Hightower can be of service.

The Giants have Andre Brown and David Wilson, but would like to have another running back after letting go of Ahmad Bradshaw. Hightower ran for 736 yards during his best season (2010), playing for the Arizona Cardinals, but has never been a high usage running back. It did start out that way when he moved to the Washington Redsksins in 2011, averaging a career high 16.8 carries per game before tearing his ACL.

The Redskins themselves aren’t looking for someone to take on much of a load. They have Alfred Morris and are expecting Roy Helu to be a bigger part of the offense in 2013, especially with RGIII under a very close watch as to the amount of rushing plays he executes and the risks he takes.

Hightower wouldn’t only provide with a capable and proven backup, but can be used in a multitude of scenarios. He caught 63 passes for 428 yards during his second season in the league, and is regarded a very good pass-blocker, which is something the Redskins need more of, knowing how vulnerable Robert Griffin III will be once he returns from his injury.
