It’s been a weird season for Mario Gomez, although it’s still not over, with the Champions League final to play. He lost his starting place for Bayern Munich because of an injury and the arrival of the much more versatile Mario Mandzukic to the club. However, his numbers suggest he is still one of the more efficient scorers in European football, with Chelsea now looking to help him find some playing time once again.

Mourinho or not, everyone knows Chelsea aren’t pleased with their striker situation, as Demba Ba and Fernando Torres combined to score 10 league goals this season (Ba was there for a half a season). Gomez, who played 21 times for Bayern in the Bundesliga (often coming off the bench), scored 11 goals in the league and six more in the German Cup and the Champions League, hoping to come out as a champion, regardless of the playing time, after the nearing Saturday.

His cost? Well, Bayern did purchase him for €30 million from Stuttgart back in 2009, and after a slightly rough debut season for the team (14 goals in 45 matches), he has since turned into a goal scoring machine, so far with a very impressive 111 goals in 172 matches for the German champions. The national team forward has also scored 25 goals in 58 caps for the German side.

Chelsea aren’t just looking for someone to score goals. Jose Mourinho (although there’s nothing official just yet) is looking for someone who can be a towering, target man presence in the box – something he doesn’t see in both Torres or Ba, and kept complaining about not having during his tenure at Real Madrid, hoping to get the same out of Gomez as he did out of Didier Drogba.

Chelsea will probably be offering around £20-25 million for Gomez. Bayern could make use of getting a big sale through, while also looking for another striker to backup Mandzukic or even better, start instead or next to him under Pep Guardiola.
