NFL Rumors – New England Patriots Still Considering John Abraham

This off-season, John Abraham has visited with the Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, yet the four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro still doesn’t have a team, but the deeper we head into training camp, the risk of injuries rise, and the chance of someone picking him up grows with it.

According to rumors around the league, the Patriots might be the most interested party of all, but just like the Broncos and Titans before them, the price Abraham is asking for at the minute is just too high, even though he brings with him 122 career sacks, 10 of them last season.

The problem with Abraham is how much he wants to play, and get paid accordingly. The Broncos, for example, wanted Abraham on the field as a third-down specialist, pass-rusher in certain situations, and pay him according to that limited role. Abraham sees things a little bit differently, and from what came out during his Titans negotiations, he wants to be on the field for 60% of the defensive snaps, and be paid accordingly.

The Patriots have the cap-space to accommodate Abraham’s demands, but Abraham himself said on a radio show that he’s looking for a multi-year deal that will give him $12 million a season. He did play on more than 70% of the Falcons’ snaps last season, ranked as one of the best defensive ends in the 4-3 system last season. He has said on the same radio show that eve if he was playing terrible, he’d still be asking for $5 million a season.

In truth? A full-time Abraham might be worth it, but it doesn’t like there’s a market for him at the moment, not at that price. However, Dwight Freeney waited out till someone needed him back because of an injury (San Diego Chargers, Melvin Ingram), and he got a two-year deal worth $8.75 million. Abraham will probably have to “swallow his pride” and accept a deal of that kind, maybe even a bit lower, if he wants to stay in the NFL next season, and as long as an injury in training camp comes along to help him out.
