Unless anything surprising happens, David Villa won’t be a Barcelona player by the end of this summer, with his destination most likely being the English Premier League, with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham all showing quite a lot of interest in the striker.
He is going to turn 32, but it doesn’t mean he’s going to come through a cheap transfer. While Barcelona know that his future isn’t with the club, especially after his disappointing performances in 2012-2013 and the arrival of Neymar (who might not be the last forward the club brings over in the next couple of months), they aren’t planning on letting him go cheaply.
Villa, who has a contract with the club until 2014, was purchased in 2010 for €40 million from Valencia, and Barcelona do not want to let such an investment leave for free. He’ll probably be sold for at least €10 million, with most estimations suggesting it’ll cost €12 million to get Barcelona to accept the offer.
According to Sport, Villa’s first option is Arsenal. Arsene Wenger tried to sign him back in January, and the Spanish colony in London, composed of Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta and Nacho Monreal is an excellent way of convincing Villa to pick them over others, although that’s only after the price is agreed with Barcelona.
Liverpool, who according to all of the reports, aren’t going to have too much money to give Brendan Rodgers to spend this summer, are trying to use their Pepe Reina connections to convince Villa that Liverpool are the right place to go to, despite not being in any European competition next season. For Tottenham, it’ll simply be about trying to offer more money than the other two clubs, and especially hoping Villa doesn’t get tempted by the Champions League Arsenal have flashing in front of his eyes.
Villa scored a total of 15 goals this season in all competitions, playing in 42 matches, coming on as a substitute in half of them. He came back after missing more than half of the previous season due to an injury sustained in the Club World Cup competition.
