There was more than one problem with the Chelsea lineup this past season, but probably their most glaring problem was the lack of a trustworthy goal-scoring striker. The arrival of a new manager might lead to rectifying that, with Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic on the shortlist for the club’s summer shopping list.
The arrival of Jose Moruinho, unlike that of Rafa Benitez or Andre Villas-Boas, will be followed by at least one or two expensive signings. While Chelsea have been trying to play by the rules over the last couple of seasons, Mourinho believes that a great manager like him deserves the proper spending account, and isn’t willing to work somewhere that doesn’t spend accordingly to his stature.
So seeing as how bad Fernando Torres and Demba Ba did last season, it’s now up to him to find players who can do a better job. Two new names one the list or Edin Dzeko, who had a so-so time during his two and a half season with Manchester City up to this point, and Stevan Jovetic of Fiorentina, usually mentioned as a new Arsenal signing, although Chelsea can probably afford prices Arsenal can’t.
Dzeko, who fits the mold Mourinho likes to see in his strikers – big, tall, strong with the ability to play with his back towards the goal, scored 15 goals in all competitions last season for City, expressing his desire to leave. He’s been rumored to be a part of a package deal that City are trying to set up in order to bring over Edinson Cavani of Napoli, but there’s also a lot of Bundesliga interest in the player who arrived for €32 million in 2011 from Wolfsburg, since then scoring 40 goals in 106 matches.
Stevan Jovetic has also looked to find another team, but he prefers staying in Italy, specifically Juventus. Juve can’t compete with the Premier League money, while Fiorentina prefer not selling to the Italian champions. The 23 year old Montenegrin offers a different kind of player than Dzeko, with the ability to play behind the striker and offers much better passing game than Dzeko.
While this is going on, Chelsea are still trying to secure the services of Andre Schurrle of Bayer Leverkusen, with the negotiations stuck for over a week.
