When the first mock drafts were coming out, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope didn’t seem like such a high pick in 2013. But things have changed, and after all of his workouts, it seems he’ll be a top 10 pick, indicated by the invitation to the green room, with either the Minnesota Timberwolves or the Portland Trail Blazers using their picks on him.
The Timberwolves have the ninth pick in the draft, and according to reports from Minnesota, team president Flip Saunders is quite high on the player from Georgia, averaging 18.5 points per game during his Sophomore year, and is widely considered as one of the best shooters going into this draft, hitting 37.3% of his shots from downtown last season.
The Timberwolves might be looking to move up in the draft, if anyone will be willing to take their two first round picks and possibly Derrick Williams (a number two pick in the 2011 draft) but if they stay at 9, Caldwell-Pope will be their man, with the Timberwolves in real need of some three-point shooting.
One position after Minnesota are the Blazers, who are high on two point guards – Michael Carter-Williams and C.J. McCollum, but McCollum will probably be taken earlier by either the Kings or the Pistons, and Carter-Williams seems like one of the riskiest picks in this draft. If Caldwell-Pope is still available at 10, the Blazers will take him, considering they already have a franchise point guard from the looks of things in Damian Lillard.
Caldwell-Pope himself doesn’t think anyone else will take him. He’s aware of his rise up the ladder of the mock drafts, and considering the teams he’s worked out for (Timberwolves (No. 9), Trail Blazers (No. 10), Mavericks (No. 13), Bucks (No. 15), Celtics (No. 16) and Cavaliers (No. 19)) the only two in the top 10 are the ones we’ve already mentioned.
It would be surprising just to go to a team that I didn’t work out for. They haven’t seen me, what I can do. it would just be surprising to me.
Feeling confident enough to be a top-10 pick, these are the only two options he thinks will come true on draft night.
