NFL Rumors – Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots & San Diego Chargers Interested in Signing Eric Wright

Eric Wright

By failing his medical exam with the San Francisco 49ers, Eric Wright suddenly became the number one free agent left to pick up, causing a lot of interest among teams in need of help in the secondary, with the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers looking into that option.

Eric Wright signed a five-year, $37.5 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last yer, but his less-then stellar performances on the field, and worse than that, his behavioral issues off of it made them regret that decision. They managed to trade him to the San Francisco 49ers, but failing his exam, he reverted back to the Bucs, who released him into the open market.

Wright is only 28, and doesn’t have any significant injury issues that most are aware of, which means it’s not very likely he’ll be left without a job. But with a certain reputation and now failing to pass a medical with the 49ers, his chances of getting a good deal with his next team have slimmed down.

And still, there are plenty of teams in the NFL still in need of a talented cornerback with some money left to throw at him. The Panthers might be the team with the lowest quality of defensive backs in the NFL, but didn’t draft any and didn’t really have enough available cap space to pursue one in free agency.

The Jags have added Marcus Trufant and Alan Ball through free agency and added Dwyane Gratz in the third round of the draft, but they were in the bottom 10 of the league when it came to defending the pass next season, and if they can land Eric Wright on a cheap deal, there’s a good chance they’ll add him.

The Patriots have a thing for released players with a problematic side to them, and their only addition at cornerback has been Logan Ryan with one of their third round draft picks. If the injury issue isn’t something that is going to last for a long time, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them taking a chance on him.

The Chargers are short in that position as well, adding a fifth-round in the draft, meaning they could use all the help they can get next season when it comes to covering wide receivers. Again – if Wright’s injury isn’t as bad as the 49ers make it seem like, he should have a team to play for very quickly.
