The New York Jets might have the least impressive wide receiver core in the NFL, which means they’re still trying to add pieces to a group that was ranked 30th in the NFL last season, with Austin Collie and Laurent Robinson as the main candidates.
The team’s top wide receiver from last season, 24-year old Jeremy Kerley (827 yards, 2 touchdowns) remains, but there isn’t much beyond him to feel confident about, not to mention the usually controversial quarterback situation, with Mark Sanchez having the usual doubters hoping to see him fall and be replaced by Geno Smith.
The Jets do have a lot of hopes riding on Santonio Holmes, but he played in only 4 games last season and doesn’t have a return date yet, which means that they really are in trouble when it comes to putting together a worthwhile receiving crew for the limited Jets’ quarterbacks to throw to.
Austin Collie remains one of the more sought after players still without a team, and he is working out for the Jets along with Robinson. Collie looked like a very promising wide receiver during his first three seasons (2009-2011) with the Indianapolis Colts, but a series of concussions has halted his improvement, and he played only once last season before being shut down.
Laurent Robinson has been in the league a little longer and seemed to be having a breakout season in 2011, catching 54 passes for 858 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Dallas Cowboys, but he too has suffered three or four concussions over the last few seasons, leading to a bad season with the Jags in 2012 (7 games, 252 yards) and finding himself looking for a team after six seasons in the NFL.
At the moment, the healthy wide receivers the Jets have consist of Kerley, Stephen Hill who has a chance to do some breaking out this season, and Clyde Gates. Potential? There is material to work with, but generally, the Jets need a better list of wide receivers in order to help their help-needing quarterback next season if they want to avoid finishing at the bottom of the AFC East.
