Another position the Detroit Lions need to improve their depth in is at wide receiver, and they will be hosting tryouts to wide receivers like Steve Breaston, Chaz Schilens and Laurent Robinson, hoping that one of them can fill the role.
They do have arguably the best wide receiver in all of football, Calvin Johsnon, but without other players to use, Matthew Stafford is limited in what he can do, not to mention double teaming Johnson becomes kind of a habit for opposing teams.
The Lions do have Nate Burleson, but the 10-year veteran caught only 27 passes for 240 yards last season, and beyond him it gets even thinner. Titus Young was released and seems to be yet another high draft pick debacle for a franchise filled with them over the last 13 years. Ryan Broyles showed promise as a rookie (22 catches, 310 yards), but he is recovering from another significant injury, which means the Lions are diving into free agency once again. Devin Thomas (added in free agency) and sixth round pick Corey Fuller aren’t exactly expected to excel.
Laurent Robinson is picking quite a lot of interest lately as teams are making another round of workouts for free agents, but there is the concussion factor regarding him, hurting his stock despite his decent performances not too long ago for the Dallas Cowboys.
Breaston caught only 7 passes for 74 yards last season for the Chiefs, and hasn’t been getting a lot of interest since being released by the Chiefs five months ago, but he does have a plus over the others in his ability to help in the return game, although it’s been a while since he spent a full season in that role.
There’s also Chaz Schilens, who has the least impressive career out of the candidates, but doesn’t carry any injury worries with him, and the benefit of the doubt for not never having a real chance to be a number two receiver on a team, hence his low career production over the last five seasons (100 catches, 1191 yards, 9 touchdowns).
