NFL Rumors – Green Bay Packers Interested in Signing Vince Young

There’s some distance to go between getting a chance to workout for a team like Vince Young is doing for the Green Bay Packers, but it also shows that the team isn’t too pleased with their situation at backup quarterback, and are willing to give Young a chance to find his place in the NFL once again.

There’s no issue for the Packers about their starting quarterback – Aaron Rodgers is as sure in his place as the play caller for the Packers humanly possible, but Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman aren’t instilling too much trust in them from the Packers’ shot callers.

Young hasn’t played in the NFL since 2011, when he was backing up Michael Vick for the Philadelphia Eagles, getting a chance to play in six games and start three of them. He completed 57.9% of his passes for 866 yards and 4 touchdowns, but he also threw 9 interceptions.

Last season he didn’t last the entire training camp with the Buffalo Bills, getting cut before the season began, putting him out of a job for the first time since he entered the league in 2006 as the 3rd overall pick for the Tennessee Titans.

Young was actually quite successful early on in his career, going 8-5 as a starter in 2006, 9-6 in 2007 and 8-2 in 2010. And yet personal issues, not to mention a huge ego led to what might be considered his downfall after a promising start, which included featuring in the Pro Bowl twice.

There’s no doubt that Young has experience as a starter and in the postseason as well which is quite welcome for the Packers, just in case Rodgers needs to sit down a little bit or actually gets injured. Is he better than Harrell and Coleman? Probably, but a year away from the game can cause drastic changes. Is he going to seriously upgrade the backup position for the Packers? Not very likely, but he deserves a shot at finding his place in the league once more.
