Undefeated Teams in Europes’ Top Leagues

Undefeated Teams in Europes’ Top Leagues

Less than a month into the new season, and it’s already hard to find undefeated sides in the top European leagues, with Liverpool, Chelsea & Everton in the Premier League, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and more in the La Liga, Dortmund and Bayern in the Bundesliga while Monaco and PSG are still without a loss in Ligue 1.

In Italy they’ve only played two matches so far, so we’ll leave the Serie A teams out of this discussion for now.

Premier League

Daniel Sturridge vs Stoke

Who is on top of the table? Believe or not, Liverpool, who haven’t been to such dizzying heights since the 2008-2009 season, when they managed to lose less than anyone else (only twice), and still finish four points behind Manchester United. The Reds have opened the season with 3 wins in three matches, all of them with a 1-0 scoreline, and Daniel Sturridge scoring all three goals.

Chelsea are also undefeated, but not perfect. They’ve beaten Hull City to start the season off and had a rather rough win against Aston Villa, but they did fail to win and score as they made their Old Trafford visit, ending in a 0-0 draw.

Everton are another undefeated side, but without too much happiness spreading around, as they drew their first three matches of the season before losing Marouane Fellaini to quite a hefty price. They’re currently 15th in the Premier League, ending their last two matches in 0-0 draws.

Spanish La Liga

Lionel Messi vs Valencia

Five teams have started the season without a loss in the first three matches, four of them picking up all nine points.

Barcelona are leading the table thanks to a 11-2 scoring record, most of that attributed to their 7-0 win over Levante to kick off the season. The rest wasn’t as impressive, including a 1-0 win over Malaga and a 3-2 away win at Valencia.

They’re followed by Atletico Madrid, with three wins and 10-2 scoring difference. They began the season with a 3-1 win against Sevilla, followed by a devastating 5-0 thrashing of Rayo Vallecano and a 2-1 win over Real Sociedad.

Next are, surprisingly, Villarreal. The Yellow Sumarine is doing very well upon their return to the top flight in Spain, beginning the season with wins over Almeria, Osasuna and Real Valladolid, enjoying an 8-3 scoring difference.

Real Madrid are fourth, struggling to find the net as much as their rivals, but still perfect. They began the season with two very tough wins over Real Betis (2-1) and Granada (1-0), followed by a slightly easier 3-1 home win over Athletic Bilbao.

At seventh place are Celta Vigo, so far winning one match (2-1 over Real Betis) and drawing two of them, both at home, against Espanyol and Granada.

German Bundesliga

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Only two undefeated teams so far (the ones you’d expect to see without a loss), although only one of is perfect.

Borussia Dortmund have begun the season with four consecutive wins, while conceding only two goals in the process. They started out with a 4-0 win over Augsburg, followed by a 2-1 win over Braunschweig, 1-0 over Werder Bremen and 2-1 over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Bayern Munich haven’t lost, but have drawn one of their matches as they visited Freiburg, ending up with a 1-1 draw. The season started out with wins over Monchengladbach, Frankfurt and Nuremberg.

French Ligue 1

Monaco Marseille

Two teams (the two you’d expect to see) still undefeated, although one of them has drawn two of their four matches, looking very sluggish early on.

AS Monaco might be the newly constructed side, but they’re having no problems picking up wins. They’ve drawn once in the opening four matches, 0-0 against Toulouse, but have won three times, beating Marseille, Montpellier and Bordeaux.

Paris Saint-Germain should be having less problems starting the season with a team similar to the one from last year, but Edinson Cavani’s arrival and the change at the coaching positions is costing them some early points. They’re fourth in the table, drawing with Montpellier and Ajaccio to kick off the season, followed by wins over Nantes and Guingamp.
