2014 World Cup Qualifying – CONMEBOL & CONCACAF Groups Results

We have our first team from the South American group making it into the World Cup (aside from the host, Brazil), as Argentina enjoyed a huge 5-2 win over Paraguay to clinch their spot. In the North American group, the huge rivalry match between the USA and Mexico ended in favor of the Americans (2-0), taking the top spot in the group, and clinching their place in the World Cup.

Uruguay find themselves on much safer ground thanks to their win over Colombia, while Mexico have fallen out of the top 4 despite their managerial change, and have now only one match from the 8 they’ve played in this qualifying group. Costa Rica didn’t win, but also makes it into the World Cup.

Argentina Beat Paraguay

South America – Argentina became the first team from the region to take their spot in the World Cup, beating Paraguay 5-2. Lionel Messi scored two penalty kicks, while Maxi Rodriguez, Sergio Aguero and Angel di Maria added more firepower. Bolivia dragged Ecuador into a complicated situation by getting a 1-1 draw out of them. Venezuela beat Peru 3-2, which keeps them at sixth, but only 3 points away from Uruguay and the play-off spot. Uruguay enjoyed a huge 2-0 win over Colombia with late goals from Edinson Cavani and Christian Stuani, cementing their place in the top 5 and with an excellent launching pad to leapfrog Ecuador.

North & Central America – Mexico find themselves in huge trouble, dropping to fifth after a 2-0 loss in the United States, with goals from Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan. The United States climbed to the top of the group, clinching their place in Brazil, as Costa Rica disappointed in their match against Jamaica, drawing only 1-1 there. It was still enough for them to make it into the world cup. Honduras helped Panama back into the top 4 by failing to beat them, in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw.
