The fact that Manchester United won only 4-2 in a very dominant display against Bayer Leverkusen can partially be blamed on Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney (who both scored, by the way) conjuring to incredibly impressive missed in front of wide open nets.
Rooney’s miss came with United leading only 1-0, and was quickly countered by an equalizing goal from Leverkusen. Rooney found it very easy to get by the Leverkusen defense and goalkeeper Leno, but the angle he was in, forcing him to use his left foot, probably made him go undecided between shoot and pass, leaving Robin van Persie quite stunned the ball didn’t go to him or in the net.
The Van Persie miss came just before the final whistle, as United were aggresively pushing to find a fifth goal after Leverkusen got their second. Antonio Valencia, maybe the best player on the pitch, sent a low cross that went past goalkeeper Leno. Robin van Persie was the first to the ball, but had a bad first touch, sending the ball across the goalline instead of
