The David Moyes crisis becomes worse, as his Manchester Untied lacks confidence, courage and the ability to actually finish off matches that should be automatic three points for them, especially at home. While Adnan Januzaj continues being the right choice  and the official fresh maker for the team, the awful signing of Marouane Fellaini is cancelling out any positives there are to be drawn from another disappointment.

So after 8 league matches, four of them at home, Manchester United have only one win at the Old Trafford, drawing 1-1 with Southampton. It’s true that Manchester United scored first and had some dangerous moments in the first half, but Southampton were the better team throughout the match, having no problem breaking through the weak midfield. It didn’t help the visitors create too many chances, but they deserved their equalizer, making the most of a sad attempt of defending a corner by Johnny Evans.

The good? Robin van Persie is scoring again, and his connection with Wayne Rooney looks dangerous. Nani looked more active and industrious than ever. It’s not translating into goals, but he’s a better option than Antonio Valencia, especially in matches that don’t call for serious defending down the right wing, where he and Rafael often result in some horrendous defensive results.

Adnan Januzaj continues to be a breath of fresh air for a team that for 75 out of the 90 minutes looked completely stagnant. He’s creative, quick and unlike most of United players, including Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney, tries to be surprising in his attacking movement and decisions. However, it’s hard to be the only game changer on the pitch, as Manchester United need more than the talented 18-year old in order to get themselves out of this rut.

The problems begin and end with the midfield, and especially Marouane Fellaini, who seems nothing like the physical and aggressive midfielder that impressed most of the time for Everton. David Moyes made some awful substitutions by introducing Ryan Giggs, Danny Welbeck and Chris Smalling, signaling to his players that he’s content with a 1-0 win against a better team, but his biggest problem is his “star” signing, Fellaini. Maybe it’s the wrist injury that’s stopping him from playing well, but it’s hard to blame an injury for all the turnovers and bad decisions he’s making, as it simply seems like he’s a man out of his depth in terms of the size of club he’s now playing for, and the actual position Moyes is using him in.

Fellaini wasn’t alone in making careless mistakes that could have been a lot more costly for Manchester United. Wayne Rooney dropped back to help the midfield and defense quite a lot, but it looked like every time he left his forward position, he left his wits there as well, making some difficult to explain back passes and decisions that luckily didn’t turn into goals. Michael Carrick continues to be the wind beneath the wings for Manchester in the midfield, but even he can’t fix and sweep so many problems under the carpet.

David Moyes isn’t getting better at his job, he just lucked out with Januzaj. Transformation and adaptation are all understandable excuses, but only to a certain point. Failure to do an even decent job with the Premier League champions this early in the season might be another hint at some very bad decisions made at Old Trafford this summer, beginning with Moyes, and onto the terrible Fellaini.
