On their way to a historic victory at Stamford Bridge, West Brom were robbed of two points as Andre Marriner mistook a blatant Ramires dive for a foul by Steven Reid, giving Chelsea an injury time penalty kick which was converted by Eden Hazard, with the match ending in a 2-2 draw.
Some awful defending by John Terry and Chelsea during the second half allowed West Brom to come back from a first half goal by Samuel Eto’o. First it was Shane Long rising high above the Chelsea defense to score off a Petr Cech save, and then it was Stephane Sessegnon, tricking John Terry and making the most of poor balance from the Chelsea goalkeeper.
From that moment on it was intense Chelsea pressure on West Brom. Juan Mata and Obi Mikel came on to try and save the day, but besides crossing and hurting the IQ levels of West Brom players forced to clear with their heads, it was actually the visiting side closer to scoring an equalizer – first with Chris Brutn doing very poorly in a 3-on-2 counter attack, and later on with a poor decision by a West Brom player to try and score from an impossible angle instead of running out the clock by heading to the corner without anyone bothering him.
This lead to a final Chelsea attack, and Ramires making his way into the box. Seeing Reid closing in on him, Ramires simply lunged forward, bumping with Reid on his way down before going to the grass. From every angle around the stadium – a blatant dive. The problem is that some referees are weak people, and cave under the slightest sign of pressure. Giving Chelsea an opportunity to equalize simply made more sense to him, so he gave a penalty that never was to Chelsea, saving Jose Mourinho from his first ever loss league loss at home as a Chelsea manager.
