College Football – BCS Standings Mess All Cleared Up

No more debated, arguments or discussions. Auburn winning the SEC championship game against Missouri, Michigan State beating Ohio State for the Big Ten title and Florida State doing what they were supposed to against Duke seals the BCS national championship game picture, which should be the Seminoles against the Tigers, while despite having just one loss, teams like the Spartans and Baylor will have to play for a lesser BCS Bowl.

Which ones? Michigan State, as the Big Ten champions, will be headed to the Rose Bowl, which they were going to play in no matter what due to Ohio State thinking too far ahead. A win for the Buckeyes would have meant the national title game, but their defense couldn’t stop Connor Cook while their offense went limp at the wrong time. Stanford, running all over the stunned Sun Devils in Tempe, will go there for a second straight year, in what should be quite similar to the game we saw from Stanford and Wisconsin last year.

Florida State kept on doing what they’ve been doing all year – demolishing their ACC rivals. The only remaining undefeated team in the country beat Duke 45-7, not scoring at all in the first quarter but following up with 38 points in the second and third, getting a big game as expected from Jameis Winston, finishing with four total touchdowns, and heading into the championship game as pretty big favorites.

The Big 12 was also quite a big battlefield. Oklahoma State hosted the Sooners knowing that a win will be enough for them to win the conference. However, an incredible finish with a little bit of official controversy led to the 33-24 Oklahoma win, moving the spotlight to Waco, where Baylor and Texas played in what turned into the Big 12 championship game.

The result? Things were close during the first half, but Baylor are simply a better football team. Case McCoy couldn’t get anything going while Bryce Petty heated up, ending in a 30-10 win for the Bears, finishing the season at 11-1, sending them to the Fiesta Bowl, even though they deserve to be in the national championship game just as much as Auburn do.

Who else is going to a BCS game? Well, Northern Illinois losing also takes them out of the picture, which is something the organizers love, hating the headache of small schools bursting onto the scene. There are quite a few options for the at large bids, which will probably be taken from the pool of Alabama, going to the Sugar Bowl, Clemson, going to the Orange Bowl, Ohio State, Oklahoma and possibly Oregon. Central Florida will get to play Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl, who were probably hoping for a bigger set of travelling fans.
