With no bowl games for the next couple of weeks, the most interesting thing happening right now in College Football is the head coach carousel. You won’t find bigger schools than Texas and Alabama to get involved in such a thing, as it seems that Mack Brown is closer to announcing he’s stepping down as Longhorns coach, while the Tide are getting worried that Nick Saban is going to be the man that fills his shoes.

According to several sources and specifically Orangebloods.com, Mack Brown will announce before the weekend that he’s stepping down as the head coach of Texas. The criticism of the last few years seem to have been too much for the coach, not to mention the persistent rumors that the Longhorns will be looking for Saban the moment the season has ended. No one can confirm an approach has been made to sign Saban from Alabama, but there has been one that suggests the Longhorns have offered him $10 million a season plus a 1% of the Longhorn network.

Alabama? They’ve offered Saban a new extension, even though he did sign one in March, giving him $5.62 million a season that runs through 2020. But the money supposedly offered by Texas, the richest football program in the nation, might be too good to refuse to. Right now, it seems that Alabama officials are stressing the fact that Saban still hasn’t signed a new contract, feeling like each day that goes by takes him closer to Austin.

Saban isn’t the only head coach Texas are looking it, as suggested by Clay Travis, reporting via ChipBrownOB that Texas are looking at Saban, Urban Meyer and Mike Tomlin, although that does sound a bit far fetched.

Brown has been with Texas for 16 seasons, winning one national title (the program’s first since 1970) and making another national championship game four years later, losing to Saban and Alabama. He has a record of 158-47 with the Longhorns, including winning at least 10 games for nine consecutive seasons, winning three BCS Bowl games, the last of them in 2008 at the Fiesta Bowl. However, since Colt McCoy left and that loss in the championship game to Alabama, Brown hasn’t won more than nine games in one season, failing to win the conference as well.

Saban bolted LSU for the NFL and the Miami Dolphins, and then quit on them to take the Alabama job in 2007. Except for going 2-6 during his first season, Saban has been a huge hit in Tuscaloosa, with his worst full year being 10-3 in 2010. He has won three national titles, with the team winning their last four bowl games, going undefeated (14-0) in 2009. He has a 74-14 record with the program.
