Two years of College Football at College Station for Texas A&M are enough for Johnny Manziel, leaving the Aggies and the SEC for the chance to become a quarterback in the NFL, officially declaring his eligibility for the NFL draft.
There have been speculations about Manziel leaving college all through this season, but he remained mostly quiet about the issue as the season entered its closing stages. He didn’t say anything after the Aggies won their bowl game against Duke (Chick-Fil-A bowl), but it wasn’t very surprising to see him make the decision to stay in the league.
Manziel made the usual statement to Aggies fans – saying how difficult it was to make the decision, how he loves them and appreciates their support. Nothing special, nothing new. The bottom line is that he’s off to the NFL, and relocating to San Diego in order to work out with George Whitfield, the private quarterback coach with whom Manziel has trained the past two summers to help him improve before the evaluation process begins.
Manziel was a sensation from the first moment he actually began playing. He led A&M to a 11-2 season in 2012, their first in the SEC, while Manziel won the Heisman trophy. He capped off the season by destroying Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl, finishing the year by setting quite a few SEC records. He accomplished 5116 all purpose yards during his freshman season and 4876 in his sophomore year, missing out on becoming the first sophomore in College Football to reach 10,000 career yards.
The Aggies struggled slightly in his second season after their offensive line and defense were hurt by players that left the team to the NFL or simply graduated. The Aggies finished the season at 9-4.
Where will Manziel be picked? Early predictions consider him to be among the top 20 players in the upcoming draft class, and probably the third best quarterback after Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles.
