One of the biggest offseason additions in the NFL heading into this season was Percy Harvin joining the Seattle Seahawks. He has been healthy enough to play in only two games so far, but a concussion he sustained in the Divisional playoff game against the New Orleans Saints is threatening to leave him out of the conference championship game against the San Francisco 49ers.
Harvin was targeted all game by the Saints, delivering big hits on the speedy receiver, eventually getting him out of the game after he caught 3 passes for 21 yards and adding one rushing attempt as well. In the regular season, he played just once for the Seahakws (in the win over the Vikings), catching one pass for 17 yards and returning a kick for 58 yards.
Pete Carroll has mentioned that Harvin isn’t practicing at the moment, and won’t be until he’s cleared by the doctors to take part of practice and hopefully the game. He lasted less than one half in the game against the Saints, who weren’t doing very well defensively during the first half, so seemed to take out their frustrations on Harvin, who missed almost all of this season due to a slight labrum tear in his hip, followed by him having hip surgery. Even after returning in November, he experienced inflammation in his recently surgically repaired hip which prevented him from playing and later felt soreness in the same repaired, which left him out of action until the postseason.
The Harvin addition was a part of the NFC West arm’s race, with the San Francisco 49ers adding Anquan Boldin earlier to the Seahawks’ signing. While Boldin (85 receptions, 1179 yards, 7 touchdowns) had one of his most productive seasons ever for the Niners, the Seahawks managed to do quite well without Harvin being involved. He might become a great addition to the team if he’s able to play, but the Seahawks have proven all season long they can do well without him.
