Floyd Mayweather Asking His Fans to Choose – Khan or Maidana

Floyd Mayweather Jr.

There’s a May 3 fight all lined up for Floyd Mayweather Jr. but no opponent, so the undefeated, number one pound-4-pound boxer has put the decisions in the hands of his fans – Amir Khan or Marcos Maidana.

It’s hard to believe a word that comes out of the mouths of promoters and boxing organizers. Besides being a cross-division champion at the moment, Mayweather is also something of a promoter if you believe him.

It doesn’t really matter who Mayweather takes on, although Khan probably means more money through PPV, but not by much. He’s never really made a name for himself in the United States after the loss to Lamont Peterson, but just like Maidana, is a promise for a type of fighter who is both beatable for Mayweahter, maybe the most important part of the deal, and offers something of a contrast in style: Both Khan and Maidana are the attacking type with quick hands who don’t really go on the defensive. The style works for Floyd, but it’s also a great angle to sell going into the fight.

There were talks of Mayweather fighting Manny Pacquiao, but just like always, that option was shot down pretty quickly. With both Maidana and Khan there are no money issues or promotional road blocks to get in the way of the fight actually happening.

Whoever he gets in the ring with, it’ll be third fight on his deal with Showtime. Mayweather made over $70 million combined from his two first fights under the new network deal against Robert Guerrero and Canelo Alvarez. Both Maidana and Khan don’t have the appeal of Alvarez, but they should bring in more than a million viewers on PPV than the Guerrero fight, although that is probably a number that’s a bit exaggerated from the lower truth.
