There were many who thought Jermichael Finley has ended his NFL career after the spinal chord injury he sustained this season, but things have changed and there’s a good chance he’ll be more than ready for the 2014 season. The Green Bay Packers might try to re-sign him, but the New York Giants are quite interested as well if more signs of progress appear.

Finley underwent spinal fusion surgery after his injury in week 7, ending his 2013 season and what many thought would be his NFL career ending as well. However, Finley’s doctor has given him clearance to take on contact practices and training in three to four weeks, which means just before free agency begins. If he’s able to show teams he has no problem taking hits and going full contact, the tight end should be a very desirable target in the free agency period.

One team already showing some signs of interest are the New York Giants. According to Justin tasch of the Nw York Daily News, Antrel Rolle has already begun some sort of recruitment process for Finely, saying at the Thurman Munson Awards Dinner that he watched SB48 with Jermichael Finley and was recruiting him to be a Giant.

Finley has been in the NFL since 2008, playing with the Packers all that time. He has had season-ending injuries before, like in the 2010 season that ended with the team winning the Super Bowl. Finley lasted only 5 games into the season before a knee injury cost him the rest of the way. He played in six games last season, catching 25 passes for 300 yards and 3 touchdowns. He has a total of 223 receptions for 2785 yards and 20 touchdowns in his career, playing the whole 16 games just twice so far.

Finley was making $8 million in 2013, and his next contract will surely be significantly lower than the $14 million for 2 years he got from the Packers in 2011, which is quite understandable considering his injury past and present.
