Not every decision the New England Patriots make is a good one, as it appears they’re trying to fix what they feel was a mistake in signing Danny Amendola, trying to trade the wide receiver. If that doesn’t work they might even release the player.

Amendola missed four games in his first season with the Patriots, catching 54 passes for 633 yards and two touchdown passes; not quite the production the Patriots expected from the slot receiver, destined to be the one replacing Wes Welker and his contributions. Amendola wasn’t much of a factor in the postseason as well: He caught 3 passes for 77 yards in the win over the Colts, but was held without a reception in the loss to the Broncos.

The worst part for the Patriots is his contract: He signed a five-year $28.5 million deal before the start of last season, and are now trying to trade this deal with several NFL teams mildly interested, although the price tag is a bit dismaying.

According to Dan Pompei, the Patriots will try and make a deal with some team for him, or maybe even reduce his salary and then trade him, but if nothing gets worked out they’ll be releasing the wide receiver, who is more known for his habit of being injured than actually producing big numbers on the field.

He has missed nine games over the last two seasons, resulting in a similar production, while playing only one game in the 2011 season, meaning that expecting a full 16-game season from him, let alone big numbers when it comes to touchdowns and receiving yards, might be a bit too much to ask.

The Patriots were very disappointing last year when it came to their passing game – Tom Brady’s decline, less than an acceptable crop of wide receivers and the injuries hurting the team all season long. In order to make the most of Brady’s remaining dominant seasons (if there are any left), improving their receiving situation is a must in the offseason.
