NFL Rumors – Washington Redskins Interested in Signing Owen Daniels

Owen Daniels

A broken leg made Owen Daniels miss most of last season with the Houston Texans, but the veteran tight end has enough interest coming at him in the market, with the Washington Redskins looking like the most serious of suitors.

Daniels, 31, has been in the NFL for 8 seasons, all of them with the Texans since being the 98th overall pick in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL draft. Daniels never stood out too much during his time in Texas, but was always a key weapon in the Texans’ offensive arsenal, catching 62 passes for 716 yards in 2012 and doing quite well in the five games before his season ending injury last year.

Daniels was drawing plenty of interest from the Green Bay Packers, but they always go young and cheap with their free agency additions, preferring to sign Andrew Quarless on a two-year deal, leaving Daniels open to more offers. He visited with the Redskins over the weekend, the only team besides the Packers he has visited with, making it quite possible he ends up playing in the NFC East by the end of the week.

Daniels isn’t going to be a number one tight end option for the Redskins – his injury issues (hasn’t played 16 games since 2008, when he made his first Pro Bowl) and age are obviously detterents from giving him a key role. But playing behind, or opposite of Jordan Reed in certain formations? That would give Washington a very dangerous and effective duo to throw to, trying to give Robert Griffin III more weapons for him to work with, or at least do a better job at it than in the past.

Jordan Reed will be going into his second season in the NFL, making the PFWA all-rookie team last year. He caught 45 passes on 59 targets for 499 yards and three touchdowns last season, but he’s expected to become a bigger part of the Redskins’ offense in 2014.
