Being part of their Super Bowl winning team doesn’t cut it anymore, and Lance Moore was released by the New Orleans Saints. He has plenty of option to choose from, with the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers leading the way in the hunt for the wide receiver.
Moore, turning 31 this August, had a disappointing 2013 season despite a career-best in 2012. He missed three games, but with Drew Brees focusing on Jimmy Graham and others quite a lot, Moore was left with only 37 receptions (his lowest since 2009) with 457 yards and two touchdowns, despite a very impressive 2012 season, in which he caught 65 passes for a career high 1041 yards.
The Steelers have just lost Emmanuel Sanders to the Denver Broncos, and are trying to re-sign Jerricho Cotchery, who caught 10 touchdown passes last season. However, Cotchery is testing the free agency waters and has recently visited with the Carolina Panthers, meaning the Steelers might be in an even bigger need of finding a new wider receiver, and more than one.
So how much of a lock is Moore? He has already visited with the New England Patriots, who continue to search for a veteran wide receiver, hoping the avoid the passing game difficulties from last season. The Steelers are in the same boat, but everyone agrees that regardless of the talent level they have for Ben Roethlisberger to throw to, without a decent offensive line protecting him it won’t make much of a difference.
Moore has played in 101 NFL games since 2006, all of them for the New Orleans Saints (went undrafted out of Toledo). He was part of the Browns in 2005, but didn’t get to play. He has 346 career receptions for 4281 yards and 38 touchdowns, and might be able to help a bit in the return game if required, although he has never scored a touchdown as a return man.
