The Ha Ha Clinton-Dix isn’t just the most unique name in the 2014 NFL Draft, but also one of the two best safeties coming from college into the pros. There are quite a few teams putting their eyes on the former Alabama man, but it seems like the St. Louis Rams and the Detroit Lions have more interest than anyone else.
Where will Clinton-Dix go? First round for sure, being one of the top two in his position along with Louisville’s Calvin Pryor. Clinton-Dix did meet with the Lions and has himself pegged as a top 10 pick, where the Lions have their first round selection. The Rams pick 13th, and some mocks have Clinton-Dix going that high, although many others think he’s more of a 20-25 kind of pick.
The truth is, beyond the sure bets which usually are the explosive athletes, franchise quarterbacks and phenom offensive linemen, it’s not about taking the best player in the draft but filling your greatest need. The Lions seem like they’re wavering between taking a receiver (Mike Evans?) with their first pick and going for a safety, something they really need.
Clinton-Dix impressed during his college career and in front of the pro scouts in Indianapolis. His ability to read quarterbacks and handle the cover 1 make him an intriguing prospect, who looks long, athletic and most important NFL ready, with a touch of explosiveness to him, although it might make him take unnecessary risks at times. The Lions are probably going to sign someone for the position through free agency, but they won’t give up on hoping Clinton-Dix falls into their laps come draft day.
The St. Louis Rams are in the same position, only 100% going after him if he’s still available at 13. Clinton-Dix finished with 7 interceptions for Alabama during his three seasons on the team, adding 3.5 tackles for a loss in his Junior and final season for the Crimson Tide.
