Defense isn’t exactly a weak spot for the Arizona Cardinals, but adding a bit of depth, specifically to the cornerback position, is something they’re looking to do in free agency, with Mike Jenkins, formerly with the Oakland Radiers and the Dallas Cowboys, looking more and more likely to be joining the team, although the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are also in the picture.
Jenkins, 29, was a first round pick by the Cowboys in the 2008 NFL draft. He did have a big 2009 season with 5 interceptions which got him into the Pro Bowl, but he hasn’t looked too impressive since, not doing anything too memorable for both the Cowboys and the Raiders over the last five seasons.
The Cardinals would like to give and provide some competition for Jerraud Powers, and Jenkins, as an option to start but not a every down kind of cornerback doesn’t sound like such a bad option. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are moving in a new direction after releasing Darrelle Revis, which means there’s room for players, although Jenkins is obviously not going to be the one who fills Revis’ shoes.
Jenkins paid the Bucs a visit on Monday and paid the Cardinals a visit on Tuesday. There hasn’t been too much interest around the player, so there’s a very good chance he’ll eventually end up with one of the two NFC teams by the end of this week.
Jenkins has played in 87 games since entering the NFL, including 16 last season, unlike most of his seasons in which he missed 3-4 games every year. He has 10 career interceptions, including two last season, which was probably his best year since that career high point in 2009, when he looked like a lock to become a great cornerback for the Cowboys for years to come. At this stage, he’s probably just happy getting offers to be a potential starter from teams instead of being buried down the depth chart.
