It seems the interest around Mark Sanchez since he’s been released from the New York Jets is growing, and after the St. Louis Rams showed some via some Jeff Fisher quotes, the Philadelphia Eagles are also in the race to sign the free agent quarterback.

Some even suggest Sanchez is most likely going to end up with the Eagles, which will create some sort of backup swap at the quarterback position. Michael Vick is now with the Jets, maybe as a starter instead of the disappointing Geno Smith. Sanchez? He’ll probably begin his way as the number 3 guy on the depth chart, with Nick Foles as the undisputed starter and second-year Matt Barkley, also from USC, backing him up.

Despite a career passer rating of 71.1 and completing passes at an accuracy of only 55.1%, not to mention throwing more interceptions than touchdowns so far in the four seasons he’s actually been playing in (missed the entire 2013 season due to a shoulder injury he might not be entirely free of), Sanchez missed only two games as a starter from 2009 as a Jets player, helping them reach two consecutive AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010, which included leading the team through four road victories in the postseason.

But the 2012 season, which included too many moments of failure and especially the infamous butt fumble moment, seemed to really shake up his standing with Rex Ryan and the organization. He survived the whole Tim Tebow festival and was going to be the starter going into the 2013 season, but was walking a fine line, without too much room for mistakes.

So after a few seasons of stardom or at least plenty of attention in New York, the next job Sanchez takes is going to be as a veteran backup, without too much of a chance to become a starter unless someone gets injured. Maybe it’ll actually be good for him to stay away from the limelight for a while, which means the Rams might be the better choice.
