The Chicago Bears are looking to add depth at quarterback not to mention some experience and quality, and are offering something of a career lifeline to Josh Freeman, who is coming off a nightmarish season, hoping that the road back to a starting position might begin with this opportunity.
The Bears visited with the free agent quarterback and he had a workout with the team. The Bears have Jerrod Johnson and Jordan Palmer at the moment at backup quarterback, and considering Cutler isn’t exactly an Iron Man when it comes to avoiding injuries AND Josh McCown going off to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it seems like the Bears are right to look for an upgrade in the backup spots at QB.
From the Freeman standpoint, he has to start from scratch. He was a starter for the Bucs from 2009 until the beginning of last season but never got them into the postseason, never showed any kind of consistency with his throws and leadership and eventually was thrown out by Greg Schiano last season after only three starts, in which he posted an awful 47.7% completion ratio, tossing three interceptions and two touchdowns.
The quarterback needy Minnesota Vikings picked him up and threw him to the lions. Well, he actually played against the New York Giants, but it didn’t matter. Freeman had an horrendous 20-of-53 throwing day, not getting a single one into the red zone and getting intercepted once. He didn’t play again for the Vikings.
The Bears? They just wants someone they feel a bit more comfortable with playing behind Cutler who missed five games last season and six games in 2011. Freeman is obviously hoping to become a starter one day again, but if he realizes his place with this team at the moment, which is Cutler’s first and foremost, he might be of great help to himself and the franchise, also by playing under Marc Trestman, who is known for having a great influence on quarterbacks.
In five NFL seasons, Freeman has thrown for 13274 yards, 80 touchdowns and 67 interceptions. He has completed 57.6% of his passes, and has a record of 24-36 as a starter.
