Two more matches in the round of 16 have been decided, as Uruguay beat Italy thanks to a Diego Godin goal, a red card to Claudio Marchisio and Luis Suarez biting and getting away with it. Costa Rica are through from the first place after a goalless draw with England, waiting for Greece, dramatically beating the Ivory Coast with a 90th minute penalty. Colobmia finish the group stage perfectly with a win over Japan and a hat trick for Jackson Martinez.
Italy 0 Uruguay 1: Instead of remembering a goal by Diego Godin, the two most imprinted moments will be the red card Marco Rodriguez used to send off Claudio Marchisio unjustly, and ignoring Luis Suarez letting his inner demons get the best of him again, biting Georgio Chiellini. Oh yeah, and Uruguay are in the next stage while Italy go home after the group stage for a second consecutive time.
Costa Rica 0 England 0: Nothing to see here. Costa Rica finish first in the group to the astonishment of everyone, England go home with two goals in three matches and only one point, not making it out of the group stage for the first time since 1958.
Japan 1 Colombia 4: Colombia asserted their dominance to complete their best group stage performance ever. Jackson Martinez scored a hat trick following Juan Cuardado opening things from the penalty spot. Shinji Okazaki scored for Japan who finished a very poor tournament with only two goals and one point. Colombia move on to face Uruguay in the next round.
Greece 2 Ivory Coast 1: Few teams lose the opening match 3-0 and somehow move on to advance. Greece took the lead and were the better team against an Ivorian side that started attacking a bit too late. Andreas Samaris opened the scoring in the 42nd minute but a Wilfriend Bony equalizer in the 74th minute put the Ivory Coast in the next stage. A foolish foul by Giovanni Sio on Georgios Samaras in the 90th minute gave Greece the win and their first ever knockout stage appearance, now waiting for Costa Rica. Greece didn’t score in the previous two matches.
The day started out badly – only one goal in two matches and a red card to Claudio Marchisio, but we finished with nine goals in the four matches, bringing us to 117 in 40 matches, making it an average of 2.92 goals per match.
