The Minnesota Timberwolves might be open to trade Kevin Love to both the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers, but won’t give the go ahead on the deal unless Klay Thompson from one team and Andrew Wiggins from the other team are included in the trades. Right now, it’s not happening.
The Warriors and Timberwolves are engaged in conversation at both the general manager and ownership level. Still, despite all the talk and exchange of ideas, nothing is happening because of a clear and present difference that’s not going to be overcome any time soon.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have Kevin Love’s expiring deal to offer, tagging Kevin Martin and his so-so deal to go along. In return? The Warriors are offering David Lee, Harrison Barnes and probably a future first round pick. Klay Thompson needs to be included as well as far as the Timberwolves are concerned. The Warriors won’t allow it, or to be more exact Steve Kerr, their newly appointed head coach, isn’t willing to give up his shooting guard. That is where we’re at right now.
The Cleveland Cavaliers haven’t been in as much contact as the Warriors are, but according to Flip Saunders any deal for Kevin Love has to include Andrew Wiggins, the number one overall draft pick in 2014 who is pulling off some impressive stuff in the Summer League circuits at the moment. The Cavs have made it publicly clear that they’re not including Wiggins in any trade, so that leaves that deal dead in the water as well.
So what now? The Timberwolves aren’t giving anyone a sense that they’re in some kind of rush to trade Love. Yes, his contract expires at the end of this season, and quite a few teams are angling their cap situation in order to have a go at him. However, the Timberwolves have about seven months to find a deal that they like, and right now are quite far away from the panic mode some might expect them to be in regarding his status.
The teams that do seem to be in panic are the Warriors and slightly less the Cavaliers. Their aspirations for next season are a bit higher up the ladder compared to the Timberwolves, yet they feel that they both need a big addition in order to make themselves contenders and not just a playoff team, although the Cavs might be feeling a bit better about themselves with LeBron James and the Eastern conference to play in.
