Thanks to Kevin Love, the Minnesota Timberwolves are a headline making team once again, although not for reasons that make everyone happy. There’s been plenty of talk and rumors regarding his trade availability with the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers being the biggest contenders, but the Chicago Bulls might have also put themselves in the race to try and sign him.
The Bulls have an impressive front court after adding Pau Gasol and Nikola Mirotic to Taj Gibson and Joakim Noah, yet their hunger and desire to sign a star didn’t end when both LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony preferred going somewhere else. Derrick Rose is a former MVP, but it doesn’t need full scale expansive explanation to suggest he’s not to be relied upon at the moment for obvious reasons.
So what will it take to get Love to Chicago? There has been a mention of Taj Gibson and Jimmy Butler at least. The Bulls wouldn’t mind giving up on Gibson if it lands them Love, while Butler is the one that “pains” them to depart from. However, history usually shows that the team getting the star out of the deal usually benefits from these trades, as long as he’s not grossly overpaid.
But is this an offer good enough for the Timberwolves? At first glance, probably not. If the Cavs are offering Andrew Wiggins, then the Bulls don’t even come close to scratching the surface. The Golden State Warriors offer, with David Lee and Harrison Barnes is probably better as well. The Bulls seem to be interested in making more moves to make sure next season doesn’t rely upon the health of Derrick Rose, but it’s hard to see them improving more than they’ve been able to do so far.
Love? He has been pretty quiet up to this point regarding his next destination. It probably begins and ends with not wanting to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves anymore, but he knows that it might take a while longer before he’s “free”. Despite all of this interest, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see it drag on into the season and until the deadline. Love will be a free agents in a year, with plenty of teams, especially the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks hoping he’ll be available by then.
