Winners & Losers of the Premiership’s First Day

The English Premier League opened it’s 2010-2011 season this Saturday, and here are the players and teams who will remember this day the most, for better and for worse.

Didier Drogba & Chelsea – Winners

A opening day hat-trick for the Premiership’s top scorer last season, as the champions gave a very chilly welcome to Premiership returnees (once again) West Brom – a 6-0 win at Stamford Bridge. Florent Malouda, who should have played more for France in the World Cup, opened and capped off the scoring in the match while Frank Lampard added one in between. Brilliant start for Ancelotti and the Blues in their title defense.

Avram Grant – Loser

Grant won a lot of supporters, especially down south, while staying with Pompy all of last season, which was pretty much doomed from the start. He did bolt for West Ham after the season ended, finally getting a team from the beginning of the season in England. Well, didn’t start off very well, as Villa crushed the visiting Hammers 3-0. I’m actually hoping Grant will fail – most of the jobs he has gotten since leaving Israel have been thanks to his connections with Super-Agent Pini Zehavi, and I believe that luck can get you to a certain point. Although it is only the first match, West Ham look like it’s going to have a very long season.

Chris Kirkland – Loser

Some thought Kirkland should have been one of the three keepers that Capello took with him to South Africa. After this afternoon’s display between the Wigan posts, I’m pretty sure those voices are buried deep deep underground. Blackpool made their Premiership debut and got a very warm welcoming party from Kirkland, who was directly to blame for at least two of the four goals, especially the last one which was completely mishandled by Chris, coming off  an Alex Baptiste cross.

Blackpool – Winners

First Premiership game for the club. Ian Holloway and his crew couldn’t have asked for a better performance and a weaker opponent than Wigan to kick off their 2010-2011 Premier League campaign.

David Jones – Winner

Best goal of this Saturday, opening the scoring in Wolves’ 2-1 win over Stoke. Simply brilliant.
